Kanye West to Mark Record-Setting Performance at 2013 MTV VMAs

Yeezy's return to MTV stage makes rap history.

Kanye West will perform at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, and he'll make rap history doing so. The upcoming set will mark the seventh time West has taken the MTV stage, tying him with current record holder Madonna.

MTV announced Ye's performance Monday (Aug. 5) via an Instagram photo of a Moonman statue, croissants and a Yeezus album all sitting atop the Brooklyn Bridge. The image was accompanied by the caption "BREAKING! Kanye West to perform at the 2013 #VMAs 8/25 at @barclayscenter! Don't worry Ye, we got your damn croissants."

West will perform his rabble-rousing single "Black Skinhead."

The three time VMA-winner's rocky relationship with award shows hit a peak at the 2009 VMA ceremony when he notoriously bum-rushed the stage during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech. The moment recently jumped back into the headlines when an old audio recording of the rapper blasting the cable network and others leaked online.

However, the VMAs have also been an outlet for West's talents for visual captivation, like in the all-white debut of "Runaway." The performance, which featured ballerinas surrounding a red-suit wearing West, was acclaimed as a "comeback" moment for him after the Swift incident.

Details behind what Yeezy has in store for viewers this year are, of course, being kept secret until the show. The 2013 MTV VMAs kick off live from Brookyln's Barclays Center Sunday, Aug. 25 at 9 p.m. ET.
